Manitoba’s capital, rising from the prairies of western Canada, is a bustling city of 681,000. With the largest Francophone population outside of Quebec and the largest aboriginal population of any Canadian city, Winnipeg is more sophisticated metropolis than pioneer outpost. The city has been a gathering place for more than 6,000 years. Aboriginal peoples met at the Forks – the meeting point of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers - to trade and hold celebrations. As Hudson’s Bay fur traders moved west across Canada in the 1730s, Winnipeg’s riverside location once again allowed it to become a major center of trade. Taking advantage of its position as the largest city closest to the geographical center of North America, today Winnipeg is the largest distribution center between Vancouver and Toronto. And today Winnipeggers are still meeting at the Forks – but now they dine and shop in the historic Forks Public Market. More on the Winnipeg Hotel Rooms...
